A Great Cavalry Story

The following is from Dr. Raquel R. Ramsey, widow of Col. Edwin P. Ramsey, 26th Cavalry, Philippine Scouts.

My husband's documentary premiered Nov 13, 2016 and was on the Oscars Short List, but we did not get a nomination. Now it is being shown in several film festivalsall over the country. One of them is the Silicon Beach Film Festival on April 22 at 6:00 pm in the Cinemark Theater on Howard Hughes Parkway, the area where my husband worked as VP for the Far East of Hughes Aircraft Corporation. The film will also be screened at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and at the Douglas MacArthur Memorial Foundation.

Update from the Former Head of the
Point Alpha Foundation

Dear all,

Some of you may remember me as the former Director of the Point Alpha Foundation, which takes care of OP Alpha. The Foundation preserves the memory of this historic site and hot spot during the Cold War and your service "on Freedom's Frontier." Since 1995, about 1.5 million people have visited the exhibitions at the OP and in the "House on the Border," which tells the story of the development of the border between 1945 and 1990 in the context of the Cold War.
During my active time as Director, we were able to establish excellent relations with veterans, the Blackhorse and 14th CAV Associations, as well as USAREUR. To take advantage of this existing network that has developed over the years, I have been assigned as the "Liaison Officer" between the veterans and their organizations and the Foundation.

I am proud and honored by this assignment and look forward to discuss future projects with you and will provide you with news about the memorial and its
development.

One of the next projects will be the installation of a path for paver stones that can be ordered through me. (More information on that will follow soon.)
For those of you planning a trip to Germany and/or OP Alpha, please let me know. I can provide assistance on English speaking guides at Point Alpha or any other issue related to your visit in Geisa/Rasdorf.

Feel free to get in touch with me at any time!

Volker Bausch

Latest Reunion Information

Lodging:

Although we are just under 60 days until the reunion, hotel rooms are becoming hard to get. Many people reserved early, and we are at that point when attendees may have to consider other lodging options. For those looking to stay at the Hilton Marietta, please reserve your rooms as soon as possible. Our latest count indicates that 20 rooms are available. We recommend making arrangements by contacting Genet, our event coordinator; her email is genet.allen@hilton.com and her phone is 678-819-3227. Once the rooms are unavailable, Genet should be able to make arrangements for you at the Hampton Inn Marietta, which is 6 miles away and $8 less expensive per night.

Transportation:

With I-85 under repair, travel from the airport--by car, bus or limo--is a bit problematic. Although there is hope that the road will be repaired by June, there is the possibility it won't get completed in time. Our best recommendation, along with the opinions of some taxi drivers, is to take the Atlanta Metro Red Line to Dunwoody Station. The cost for a one-way pass is $4.50 with the purchase of a reloadable card. The return trip from Marietta will cost $2.50; the trip takes about an hour. Scott Harrison is working on a shuttle service from Dunwoody Station to the Hilton Marietta and will provide more details in the May E-News. Alternatives to the automobile include a taxi for about $75 or a limo for between $75 and $125. If you are arriving at the airport, please contact Scott Harrison to get an update on road repairs and/or to coordinate shuttle rides to the hotel: sharrison@gmail.com.

Registration:

Please remember to register as soon as possible with AFR. If you are planning to participate in the Fort Benning tour, golf outing, Atlanta tour, or Friday/Saturday night activities, we need your registration to ensure we plan the proper support (buses,
food, etc.). This is especially important for the Fort Benning tour because we will submit a bus manifest to Base Security prior to our departure. For those traveling on their own, your identification card will get you through. If you are having any problems with registration, please contact Donna, our AFR coordinator, by email at donnalee@afri.com or by phone at 706-356-1905.
